When you’re in the middle of raising young children, Christmas can feel… busy.

There are presents to wrap after bedtime, school concerts to remember, matching pyjamas to find, elves to move, lists to write, and enough glitter to last until Easter.

Sometimes it feels like you’re simply trying to make it to Christmas Day in one piece.

Then, almost without warning, everything changes.

One year they’re climbing onto Father Christmas’s knee with wide-eyed excitement. The next they’re insisting they’re too old for matching pyjamas. Before long they’re making plans with friends, working weekends, or coming home from university for Christmas.

The traditions quietly change.

It’s something I think about every year when families come into the studio for their Christmas mini sessions.

Parents often apologise because their toddler won’t sit still, the baby is grumpy, or someone has decided they absolutely refuse to smile.

I’ve done the same!

They leave wondering if we’ve managed to get anything at all.

Then they see their gallery.

The little smiles. The cheeky expressions. Tiny hands holding Christmas decorations. Missing front teeth. The way siblings laugh together when nobody asks them to.

Those are the moments that matter.

Not because everything was perfect.

Because it wasn’t.

As photographers and parents, we know something that we often don’t realise until much later.

The things you worry about today are often the very things you’ll miss the most.

The chubby cheeks.

The cuddles.

The excitement over a wooden toy train.

The way they still reach for your hand.

And they’re right.

Children grow in the blink of an eye.

They’re about pressing pause for half an hour in the middle of the busiest season of the year and capturing your family exactly as they are.
